Rochine Melandri Steenkamp is a Researcher at the Global Environmental Law Centre (GELC) in the Faculty of Law, University of the Western Cape (UWC).
Before joining UWC, she held various roles including as an Academic Assistant, Temporary Lecturer, and Writing Centre Consultant during her time at the North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus (NWU). She also worked as a Grant Officer at Sustainable Energy Africa for a year, where she developed insight into the energy sector.
She holds an LLB and LLM in Environmental Law and Governance obtained from the NWU. She also completed an exchange semester at Tilburg University, Netherlands, where she successfully completed modules such as compliance and enforcement, international human rights law, international security law, and external relations. She obtained her LLD (doctorate in Law), concentrating on law and governance responses to optimise water security in South African cities in 2023 from the NWU. The research for this degree was conducted under the auspices of the South African Research Chair in Cities, Law, and Environmental Sustainability (CLES), also based at the NWU.
Her academic research primarily revolves around exploring perspectives on urban law and governance, particularly at the intersection of environmental law, climate change, energy, biodiversity, and water law. She is responsible for teaching the Environmental Law elective (LLB undergrad), Advanced Environmental Law, and International Environmental Law (LLM level). She is also responsible for undergraduate and postgraduate research supervision, including working closely alongside the GELC Director, Prof Angela van der Berg with research project management, international partnerships and funding applications.
