Dr Soyapi is a Senior Lecturer based at the North- West University, Faculty of Law. He has experience in teaching, postgraduate research supervision, and legal practice. He is educated in International Trade and African Environmental Law.
Dr Soyapi’s research expertise focuses on environmental constitutionalism in Africa. Based on his experience in this area, Dr Soyapi was invited to participate in an elite panel of presenters for the 2021 year- end Journal of Environmental Law’s Workshop on “Different Voices, Different Knowledges”; organised through the University of Oxford. In June of 2021, Dr Soyapi was also invited as an expert commentator for Thematic Working Group 3 on Refugee and Human Rights Law at the workshop on “Developing a Research and Policy Agenda to Address Displacement and Migration in the Context of Disasters and Climate Change in Africa”; organised by Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law, UNSW; Platform on Disaster Displacement (PDD); International Organization for Migration (IOM); UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR); Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). In 2020 Dr Soyapi was invited to become the African region’s Deputy Director for the Global Network for Human Rights and the Environment. Finally, in 2019 Dr Soyapi also represented South Africa at the United Nations (UN) Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and the Environment during the “Expert Seminar on Best Practices, Lessons Learned and the Way Forward with Regard to the Right to a Safe, Clean, Healthy and Sustainable Environment”
