The mission of the Centre is to undertake cutting-edge research in its research niche, train subject specialists and experts equipped with the necessary skills to work in the field of international criminal law, transitional justice, transnational organised crimes and related fields both at the local, regional and international levels, whether in academia or industry.

Through the interdisciplinary expertise of its members and research associates in law, anthropology, history and political science, it targets development practitioners and policy makers such as judges, ministry of justice officials, traditional leaders and law reform commissions.

Welcome to the Global Environmental Law Centre (GELC). We are based at the Faculty of Law, University of the Western Cape, South Africa. We are affiliated to the Department of Public Law and Jurisprudence.

Every year, the Institute produces more than 60 articles, books and research reports and hosts more than 50 workshops, conferences and seminars. It houses professorial and research staff of national and international repute including three NRF-rated researchers.
