Two significant pieces of legislation - the Basic Conditions of Employment Act and the Employment Equity Act - were enacted in 1997 and 1998. Their aim was, inter alia, to address discrimination and exploitation in the workplace.
Roseline Nyman examines women's status in the labour market as a category of workers who experience particular discrimination and discusses whether these two statutes address the obstacles experienced by women in the workplace. The fact that many women are employed in poorly regulated and unorganised sectors of the economy, it is concluded, places them out of reach of many of the legislative changes.
