The Centre for Applied Legal Studies ('CALS') has been involved in litigation aimed at the protection of human rights for more than three decades. CALS has witnessed and experienced the oppressive system of apartheid, worked in South Africa through the transformation into a new democracy, and continues its work in a constitutional democracy. Throughout CALS' experience in litigating human rights, it has used international laws and principles to assist in the recognition and enforcement of human rights. The use of international laws, norms and principles may be in either a direct or an indirect manner. These international laws and principles are incorporated into all aspects of CALS' work, from research through advocacy and litigation. Human rights litigation cannot be separated from international laws and principles.
