Lady Justice Joyce Aluoch, EBS, CBS, is a former Judge and First Vice-President of the International Criminal Court at The Hague, The Netherlands. She was the second woman Court of Appeal, High Court Judge, as well as Magistrate in Kenya. Upon retirement from the bench in 2018, she successfully moved her legal profession to Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanisms, particularly mediation and arbitration.

She is a Certified International Mediator (IMI), a Certified Advanced Mediator, a Chartered Mediator and an Accredited Mediator. She co-founded Aequitas Mediators, and conducts mediations under the Court Annexed Mediation Program (Kenya), FIDA-Kenya, international and domestic mediations and virtual mediations. She is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators London and the Kenya branch, International Council for Commercial Arbitration, Africa Arbitration Association and Nairobi Centre for International Arbitration. She was recently appointed a member of the International Advisory Board of the office of Ombudsman for the United Nations Funds and Programs, Chair of the Advisory Board of the Africa-Asia Mediation Association (AAMA), Board member, Mediators Beyond Borders International (MBBI).

She is a law graduate from the University of Nairobi, an advocate of the High Court of Kenya, and holds a master’s degree in International Affairs (GMAP) from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University where she was honoured as a distinguished alumna, and again in 2018, she received the University’s top award only granted to those who have carried the University’s ideals throughout their career. This made her the first black person to receive such an honour. She is an adjunct Professor of the Faculty of Law, University of the Western Cape, South Africa. She is a recipient of several international and national awards including Presidential Awards of Elder of the Burning Spear (EBS), First Class Order of the Burning Spear (CBS) and Trail Blazer Award (CBS).
